Biography
Youth
Althaea was trained in The Sisterhood of the Hiding Sun's abbey, hidden deep in the Fae Wild. As she was in fact the only novice, living among elderly Sisters, most of her free time was spent on her own, exploring the sprawling forest-abbey while sneaking up upon hapless faerie dragons, treants and even unicorns, pretending they belonged to Those That Would Taint Its Light! Althaea herself knew nothing of her life before being brought to the temple, and she did not much care. However once, on of her 'expeditions', she did overhear two of her fellow sisters talking about her unusual aptitude for channeling.
The Truth is Gone!
This quiet life was brought to an end when, doing her sacred rounds of the abbey, the abbess simply found The Truth to be gone! Devastated, she was hit by a seizure that immediately proved fatal. In the ensuing turmoil, anxiety about the coming of the The Appointed Time fought with a deep sense of failure and a desire for revenge upon Those That Would Taint Its Light who had clearly stolen The Truth. After a hasty one and a half years deliberation the Sisters decided that the unthinkable was needed: one of them had to go into the other world to find out what had happened to The Truth! As she was deemed most physically capable of such an undertaking, Althaea was ritually ordained as the Sisterhood’s Truth Seeker. As such she was sent on her way into the mysterious plane she knew only from her mythology lessons under the enigmatic name: The World.
Another World
Upon arrival in the other world Althaea was shocked to find it dead: as far as she could see in any direction there was naught but sand! A more careful study showed that some fauna and flora did still exist but it was small and pathetic. Knowing not what to do, she decided to just pick a direction and walk. After two thirsty days this brought her to the town of Tombstone where she made contact with this world's somewhat more intelligent lifeforms who sent her to an establishment called The One-Eyed Nymph Saloon after she asked around about other Sidhe being present. Almost immediately upon entering this strange building made of square stones and dead trees, a fight began which led to the formation of The Posse. Under their guidance she slowly found her way in this strange world where life is hectic but colorless, magic all but dead and men have way too much power.
Truth Seeking
Working with the posse to clean the town of Tombstone, Althaea met the young female drow Chalithra Pharn a member of the Order of the Hidden Moon, another Sisterhood dedicated to Sariel located in the Underdark. The Order has its own version of The Truth that was transmitted orally. Although Chalithra was not old enough to have heard it she did know that something important was happening as the majority of her order had been sent out to find the mythical Relics of Sariel. Chalithra herself was too find the Manes of the Unicorn but was unable as she had lost her holy spear in her fight with Althaea, as a consequences of which she was being hunted by her order. The two therefore struck a deal, Althaea would look for the Manes and when she found them they would have a holy duel over their ownership. Eventually she found them at Gateborne Abbey where they were worn by a minotaur possessed by some of the shards of Zebulon’s soul. In this same monastery the posse was also able to free an angel of Aedon named Redilan who revealed that Sariel was currently in The Elemental Chaos.
The Truth is Found!
Some days later, after a war council at Vertigo Manor, Countess Alexandra revealed to Althaea to be in possession of The Truth, which was however still illegible. As Alexandra would not reveal who gave the scroll to her Althaea ‘borrowed’ it do have Foxes do an Object Reading on it. When during the Object Reading the scroll was unfolded, Althaea found that The Truth had become legible! Thus she had Mouse make a copy of the text before returning the scroll to Alexandra’s possession. The text spoke of Helios slaying The Messiah and the apostles jointly walking the Dromenon that formed out of his blood to become immortals, thereby stabilizing the world. Sariel regretted this deed and created three orders (one for the sun, one for the moon and one for the stars) to ensure that when The World would become unstable again and a new Dromenon would be formed that The World would improve for the better. During the ritual the scroll was revealed to indeed having been written by Sariel herself, who looked very much like Althaea. It was eventually stolen by someone working for the apostle Shelba and then sold to an agent of Alexandra.
Feeling obliged to report back to her Sisterhood, Althaea went back to the portal to The Fae Wild from which she had originally come into The World. Once on the other side she performed a ritual sending to the current Abbess of the Sisterhood which stated: "Found The Truth. Manes of the Unicorn too. Appointed Time is upon us. Sariel is in Chaos. I will seek her. World depends on it." In reaction she received the order to remain where she was and wait for further instructions. Afraid of having to wait for the elderly sisters to come to a consensus or of being taken of the job, Althaea immediately fled The Fae Wild and returned to The World. There she roamed through The Waste for several days, meditating on The Truth and the path she should take. Eventually she came to the conclusion that her primary allegiance was with Sariel, not with The Sisterhood of the Hiding Sun and that she should dedicate herself to becoming the perfect vessel against Those That Would Taint Its Light so that when the next Dromenon is formed, the world will change for the better! To mark this next step in her quest she adopted the title Taint Slayer, even though this was officially only possible through ritual ordination.
Just a few days after returning from The Waste, Althaea dueled Chalithra Pharn over the possession of the Manes of the Unicorn. Beforehand, Althaea showed The Truth to Chalithra, who was unconvinced. Despite Chalithra cheating Althaea soon bested her.
Taint Slaying
When later that day, the posse was spending the night in the Palace Beyond on their way to Scorpion Keep Sariel, in the form of a unicorn, appeared before Althaea in her trance. She urged Althaea to go to the drow city of Shaszuan in order to slay the current abbess of the Order of the Hidden Moon. The goddess explained that by displacing this woman, Althaea was to become the new abbess of the Order of the Hidden Moon, a position that would make it possible to realign the order with its original purposes. When inquiring after the third order, Sariel replied that it would be best if Althaea would first familiarize herself with the moon, before reaching for the stars. On Althaea's other questions the goddess replied that now was indeed the time to reveal The Truth and that she was currently residing between worlds making it difficult to communicate.
Leaving the Palace Beyond at Soldier's Wall the posse met a tired and resigned Luthus who confirmed the veracity of The Truth.During this conversation Garret Jr. revealed that he had written a tainted version of The Truth which aimed to publish in his newspaper. Luckily Althaea was able to strike a deal with him so that some errors could be amended in exchange for some help in arranging a marriage. While in the drow city, Althaea mainly remained hidden, only to appear at opportune moments to spread word of her presence. Doing so, she found that one of Garret's prospective brides was in league with the archdevil Dispater. When, with the help of the rebornChalithra Pharn, she and the posse went to The Order of the Hidden Moon to assassinate the abbess, they found that she too was working with this diabolical force. Luckily the posse managed to survive the ensuing attack by Dispater and his cronies by summoning the angel Redilan and her friends, who also proved willing to help Althaea to convince the remaining sisters of The Order of the Hidden Moon to chose the straight path. Althaea left Chalithra in charge as the priorissa cluastralis and ordered her to keep the balance in Tashuzan.
A few days later the posse was attacked by a group of fierce female Sidhe-dar-Kai spear warriors who managed to swiftly kill Althaea with the help of a Bodak that Althaea was unable to hurt due to the tainted state of Sariel's Horn. Foxes returned Althaea from The Unknown by replacing her spirit with that of Coyote, which she had traded with the enigmatic Saldoran Gorst for parts of Zebulon's soul. Enlivened by this cunning spirit Althaea and the rest of the posse were able to quickly slay Althaea’s slayers. Upon inspecting the bodies Althaea recognized that parts of the text tattooed on their bodies corresponded to The Truth, except that this version implicated Sariel in the slaying of The Messiah.
Later that night Foxes performed two rituals for Althaea. Speaking with the deceased leader of the Sidhe-dar-Kai, she learned that they came from Narghai and the she was sent by someone named Lei-Ras. From an object reading Foxes received images of what was supposedly a corporeal Jelleneth forging Sariel’s Horn and an unknown woman sacrificing someone to Orcus to taint it. More troublesome, Foxes also claimed to have visions of Sariel slaying The Messiah with the Horn and of Sariel breaking up into three different women, a Sidhe, a Drow and a Sidhe-dar-Kai each gaining one of the three Relics.
Soon after she unknowingly met Lei-Ras the latter of these three and killed her in such a way that her soul was sacrificed to Orcus. To try to reclaim her focus Althaea decided to only use the weapon when a chance to clean it would present itself and use Coyote to devise a scheme to force Foxes to be upfront with her. Due to dealings with Saldoran Gorst Althaea was able to retrieve her soulas well as that of Lei-Ras although at the expense of the trust of Garret and Dapper. From Saldoran Althaea also learned that she was not a Sidheborn Fey, butv that her soul contained traces of Sariel’s, making her something he called a Godborn Fey. Luckily the scheme to make Foxes tell the truth eventually succeeded, thereby clearing not only Sariel's name but also diminishing some of the pressure on Althaea.
The Truth is Spread!
During the ensuing war against Neron Althaea acquired a group of zealous female missionaries she named The Rays of Revelation. She sent them out into The World to spread The Truth as Sariel had decreed. From her librarian Geraldine Pearson Althaea also gained a new clue regarding the possible presence of Sariel's final Relic in Armaca as well as valuable information regarding The Order of the Falling Stars. Visiting Chalithra Pharn, Althaea saw that her order had Tashuzan under control which, amongst other things, helped her relax. Upon returning from the Underdark was finally able to cleanse Sariel's Horn by killing floating necrotic toddlers. With the Relic's taint being eliminated Althaea also felt a darkness being lifted off of her own soul and a renewed sense of purpose filling its place!
Upon her return to Vertigo CityAlthaea learned that members of the Sisterhood of the Hiding Sun had arrived as well. Their new leader Lothara did not take kindly to Althaea's insubordinations and challenged her to a duel. She did this despite confessing that Althaea was left at the order's monastery with a note from Sariel claiming the child to be the next abbess of the order. Although the fight was apparently meant to be judged by the Sidhe version of Sariel, she was assailed by angels and unable to reach through, except to say that slaying Helios should now be the number one priority. This was probably to Althaea's benefit as it seems unlikely that this version of the goddess would have decapitated Lothara from behind thereby saving Althaea as the Drow version who now took care of the honors ended up doing. Having sent a message to the remaining members of The Order of the Falling Stars that she was now their abbess as well, Althaea is now in effect the abbess of all three of Sariel's orders. To aid her own Rays of Revelation she had 2000 pamphlets with The Truth printed as she could not convince Garret Jr. to honor his deal. Eventually, however, the young man did what was right by dedicating an article in his newspaper to the evils of Helios.
Becoming a Vessel
After sending her fellow Sisters to help The Rays of Revelation slander Helios’ good name, Althaea and the posse went to the woods of Armaca. Here, just before finding the Manes, disaster struck in the form of a hydra who slaughtered Althaea. Foxes brought her back with the soul of Lei-Ras which, despite Althaea using her experience with Coyote to strike a deal with this powerful force, did have severe repercussions on Althaea’s body. It now remains to be seen whether Althaea will able to keep Lei-Ras’ powerful hatred focused on Helios with the help of the Relics of Sariel or whether more soul fragments are going to be needed. In this struggle Althaea was not to have the support of her friends from the posse, as other duties called more strongly for them. And as she knew it would be foolish to go after Helios without their support she channeled her hatred of that supreme betrayer into a guerrilla media war. For this she used the The Rays of Revelation to spread pamphlets containing The Truth and secretly convert people to worship the Messiah instead of Helios. Meanwhile she commanded The Sisterhood of the Hiding Sun to protect these missionaries and their converts.
Unknown to these two groups she also called The Order of the Hidden Moon to the surface world and employed them for sabotage missions against the church-owned printing presses that were producing the new Heliocentric additions to The Bible as well as on assassination missions against important Heliocentic priests and monk. After a a year and a half, however, such indirect actions no longer sufficed to keep control of Lei-Ras raging soul, so Althaea came up with a plan to bring back the Messiah as a beacon of hope against Helios' taint. The posse however could not be convinced to come along and so Althaea set on this quest alone, unwilling to risk the lives of her sisters.
Imprisonment
Going through the Palace Beyond to Memnon Althaea sneaked into the Tomb of the Messiah rather easily. Once inside, however, she was held up by devious traps and powerful guardians. And although Althaea was able to defeat them all, she did so at considerable cost, forcing her to retreat with the exodus knife. Unfortunately, in addition to traps, Althaea had also triggered an alarm which summoned Jedidiah's elite guard, amongst whom was an arch-mage that managed to locate the portal to the realm were Althaea's was hiding. Still carrying the soul of the Messiah, Althaea needed to come up with a plan. Eventually she called for Saldoran Gorst who, trustworthy as ever, appeared immediately, ready to strike a deal! After a little back and forth Sal received the soul of the Messiah as well as all of Althaea's magical belongings on a temporary loan. In return he bound himself contractually to appear before Althaea with all of these belongings when she would call him, no matter how inconvenient or seemingly impossible the situation or conditions. The Messiah's soul, on the other hand, was to be returned only to Foxes when she would ask for it.
When the portal eventually opened Althaea did put up a fight, but was of course captured. What followed was more than two years of intense torture by various angelic and demonic followers of Helios who all wanted to learn the whereabouts of the soul of the Messiah. The only thing they got out of her, however, were the words "This I shall only tell your master Helios in person." There were two reasons Althaea was able to put up such a challenge. One was Lei-Ras' conviction that eventually Helios would come, Sal would be summoned, and Althaea would be able to fulfill her goal. The other were Sariel's visits to Althaea's dreams. Through Sariel Althaea was able to communicate with Chalithra whose love and stories of the resistance kept her sane. Then, after two years, Chalithra herself was suddenly able to visit Althaea's dreams, giving them loving and passionate moments together. After some months, however, Lei-Ras' soul grew weary and Althaea started to become paranoid. Why didn't Chalithra want to talk about the guerrilla war? Why was she so obsessed with the Messiah? When eventually she started asking questions and finding holes in Chalithra's stories she confronted her. Then, right before Althaea's eyes, Chalithra transformed into someone else and introduced herself as Circe, daughter of Helios. Struggling to hide her swelling anger, Althaea acted defeated and broken. But when Circe left for a moment she called upon Saldoran, dressed into her battle gear and hid in the shadows. When Circe next returned she was quickly dealt with by a raging Althaea, who then fought a way out of Jedidiah's dungeons to find the posse to end Helios once and for all!
The Truth is Avenged!
After fleeing the scene of Circe's slaying, Althaea met up again with the whole posse for the first time in four years. Immediately she found herself wrapped up again in a violent turmoil of events. Within minutes of coming together they were fighting to prevent an aspect of the Queen of Air and Darkness freeing her Exarch and the next day, after having recovered in the arms of Chalithra, they were on their way to The Fox Lands where the spirits were fleeing from Goddess Rock. On their way there Mara caught up with them in a strange flying ship and at the location she was able to determine that most of the seals were already broken. She also told Althaea of her conviction that Helios made people belief that Aedon was the Sun God in order to be able to destroy him. Regretably this conversation was disrupted by an Aspect of The Ashen God appearing at the scene. Although he was defeated he and his vampiric compatriots were able to destroy the final seals, thereby releasing The Sun Eater. Wasting no time the posse and Mara followed this wolvish elemental spirit upwards to Versailles where after fighting through some angels they finally were able to confront Helios, who was severely wounded by the now dead Sun Eater. Although Helios accused the posse of being mere puppets of the real powers he was soon turned into the posse's own puppet, clumsily walking about dazed and confused while the posse teared him to pieces! Although Althaea contributed enthousiastically to the carnage she was happy that the final blow was delivered by Garret's tainted sword rather than her tainted spear so that Helios' soul is now for ever destroyed rather than offered to Orcus.
With past crimes now avenged the posse, however, was not offered a moment of respite as the sun started falling from the sky! Luckily, although for some reason Mara did not seem willing to take them back down to The World she did leave them a phoenix feather, enabling escape through the Palace Beyond. After riding back to the Fox Lands from Vertigo Manor to see the destruction caused by the fallen sun the posse soon found the reason for Mara's reluctance: Shelba was walking the Dromenon that had apparently poured out from Helios' veins...
Filling the Vessel
Although Althaea was dead-set on catching up with Shelba she barely made progress at first as Lei-Ras tried to keep her from adjusting to the divine pattern of Helios' blood. Luckily she could count on the help of Raven and Dapper so that she did not fall too far behind. Then, because of the workings of the Dromenon, Dapper and Althaea came face to face with the Witch-Queen of Azhabar and with some help from the other posse members they were able to not only stop here but to knock her out. Continuing without Dapper (who had only set foot in the Dromenon to stop Shelba) Althaea was soon confronted with another obstacle: a strange dancelike vision of love and possession featuring herself and Chalithra, Lei-Ras and Circe, and Coyote and Mara. Unable to expel Coyote, Althaea moved on fatigued and distracted only to come to another test where the Relics of Sariel dissipated before her eyes. Luckily, after noticing that letting go was the only way to save these precious artefacts, this test was succesfully withstood. The final test proved more difficult, however, as Althaea was again facing Lei-Ras. But by channeling Sariel, giving into Lei-Ras precisely as much as needed and a bit of stubborness Althaea again prevailed, thus coming to the center of the Dromenon. Here, the cosmos revealed itself to Althaea, showing things such as a cheating Chalithra, the Drow aspect of Sariel bartering for Althaea's soul with Saldoran Gorst as well as the true Sariel, chained in a doorway in The Elemental Chaos. Unable to cope with all these truths at once, Althaea did the only thing she could manage: hide from them! In turning to herself in this way Althaea also opened herself up to the various scattered fragments of Sariel's soul, thus ensnaring them within her own undead body. This additional power came just in time, as the daughters of Shelba were soon on the scene to walk the Dromemon as well. In the combat that ensued, only Mara was allowed to live, while Morgana was able to flee.
Wanting to contribute to the safekeeping of the Dromemon Althaea soon sent word to the Sisterhood of the Hiding Sun to command them to take up post in the Fox Lands to slay any would be Dromemon-walkers. The Rays of Revelation on the other hand were given a new message to proclaim: Freed from his masculine cage and with Sariel's help the Invisible God has been able to overthrow the usurper Helios so he could once again become the supreme yet untangible and genderless God that The Messiah had wanted to proclaim before he was treacherously murdered by Helios. They are also to promote worship of Selene as she protects us while the sun is hiding and to speak prophetically of the coming of a new Sun Goddess!
On the posse's ensuing quest to thwart The Ashen God's plans to overthrow Vertigo with an army of Zebulon-embedded commoners, Althaea was presented with several opportunities to silence the soulful clamoring inside her undead body: by doing something purely for herself (namely scaring the shit out of Garret Jr.) she was able to please the Drow fragment of Sariel's soul, by helping slay the Demon Lord Orcus (imprisoned by The Ashen God to tap his power) she was able to permanently cleanse the Relics of Sariel and by having Chulyen contact a powerful spirit she came to know the last desperate words spoken by the Messiah thereby appeasing the Sidhe fragment of Sariel's soul. Since Lei-Ras was already quieted with the slaying of Helios, only the the lovelorn soul of Chalithra now remained seperate. Althaea's anger towards Chalithra, however, prevented her from doing anything to appease that one too. Even more so when an ancient soothsayer 'foretold' that the now soulless Chalithra would only stop cheating on Althaea if Althaea would recover her fully living body or when she would free Sariel and merge with her, thereby destroying both her and Chalithra, the daughters of her Sidhe and Drow aspects.
Final Confrontations
Althaea, however, was not given any respite as the posse had to act quick to prevent The Ashen God from using his vessel Iscariot as a portal to let his full form enter The World. In the epic battle that ensued the posse was only able to slay Iscariot for good, and so permanently keep the Slumbering Lord at bay, by walking the Chaos Dromenon. Chulyen, however, decided not to attune herself to this abomination so she was quite appaled when Althaea not only did attune herself but even, like Garret, finished its labyrinthine path to the end. Althaea, however, knew deep inside that such a sacrifice was needed. Order alone could not keep this world in balance, Chaos too was needed even if this meant having to see the now soulless Relics of Sariel crumble before her eyes.Empowered by the raw forces of this Dromenon Althaea immediatly teleported to the place she needed to be: Sariel's prison. There Althaea quickly laid waste to those guarding her goddess but she did not immediatly set her free. Instead she asked her a simple question: "My Mother, Grandmother and Veracious Goddess are you, the Hiding Sun, prepared to rise?" Sariel answered by saying: "I am not, nor have I ever been, the Hiding Sun. I was merely the one that had her hidden away. The Truth was not the only thing kept save by your Sisterhood." To this Althaea replied somewhat angrily: "I fear I do not understand what this means." "No my child, grandchild and zealous vessel of my soul," Sariel said kindly, "you fear that you precisely know what must be done. But know that I do not condemn you for it, my meddling days are done, it is your turn now!" At these words the rage in Althaea only grew and before she knew what she was doing she charged forwards and plunged Sariel's own spear deep inside the chained goddess who only smiled in return.
As the goddess bled out Althaea almost expected the blood to become another Dromenon but instead it just created a small filthy puddle below her feet and for quite some time nothing happened. But then Althaea slowly started to become warmer as if she was absorbing some invisible light coming from Sariel's body. At first the warmth was a welcome comfort to her undead body but after some time she started sweating profusely as Sariel's power started to blister up her unliving flesh, burning the conglomerate of souls hiding inside into something new and blazing. Even Althaea's spirit was caught up in this searing renewal. After what seemed an eternity later all the souls were gone and a new Althaea was formed. All the souls? No, the soul of Chalithra which had never been merged with the others, still remained apart. Not quite remembering why she had been so angry at the poor girl, Althaea pulled this soul out of her and sent it back to Chalithra, thereby turning her into her first exarch. Despite all this turmoil, however, the power of the Chaos Dromenon had still not left Althaea's revitalised body and thus she decided to use this power for something useful. With utmost concentration she fashioned raw Chaos into a unstable blade with which she cut away three small splinters of her soul which she then fashioned into three items: a spear, a cowboy hat and a face scarf.
Bringing a New Dawn
Walking out of the Chaos, Althaea soon met up with Dapper who was arranging the reinforcements of the Second Wall. With him she set out to return to Vertigo, a trip which was greatly sped up by two of Chulyen's flying horses. Arriving in Gatebourne she there found that Garret had fallen for the lures of worldly power by having himself crowned as the new Emperor while Chulyen had given up on limiting bherself to one physical form. Together the four of them set out to the Tower of Lost Suns, the access to which was denied them by the remaining Apostles who seemed impervious to common sense and therefore had to be beaten into the ground, a fight in which Althaea was hardly needed. Upon entering the tower the posse came face to face with an old man who claimed to be not only The Invisible God or Aedon but also Anadon and even the creator of the various worlds. In addition he turned out to be a rather arrogant, power-hungry, possesive, chauvinistic, grumpy and perverted old man and therefore probably the root cause of many of The World's problems. As such it came as no surprise that he denied them access to his collection of old suns, saying that he would rather see this world wither away to make room for a new one. Chulyen, however, did not need his permission and went upstairs to select one anyway. Although the old man objected to pretty girls in his prize room he soon came to regret these words as Althaea, suffused with her own divine energy, as well as Chulyen's primal spirits, evaporated the old man's physical form in an overwhelming blaze of unstoppable radiance while Garret and Dapper took care of the Dragon he had summoned. Garret and Dapper both stated not to have any interest in becoming Sun Gods with the former being content with worldly power and the latter with his position on the Wall. With the path to ascension now free Althaea chose a Spirit Sun to govern over while Chulyen decided to take the rest and usurp Aedon's governance of them. Rising to great heights Althaea brought The World a new dawn and with it new hope. Residing in her spacious solar palace Teotihuacan she remained as of yet blissfully unaware of the blasphemous cracks in her immortal soul that would one day cause her blood to spill and shape a new Dromenon and start everything anew.Personality and Beliefs
Another personal quality standing in the way of attaining this pure state of calm is Althaea's insatiable curiosity. Especially discovering the various ways in which people view the world(s), as well as the powers and forces controlling it, holds her special fascination. Her curiosity of other worldviews did on occasion bring her into conflict with her fellow Sisters who did not appreciate the fact that she often extended her questioning attitude to the order's own age-old traditions.
For Althaea however, her personal connection to Sariel is of a much more fundamental religious importance than these traditions, as she considers those merely interesting.
From the moment she entered The World, Althaea came to care deeply for it. Although it is barren and dead when compared to the magical exuberance of The Fae Wild, it also has a certain unique and intoxicating dynamic to it. As a result Althaea considers it her holy task to safeguard it.
